In this article, we meet recent graduate Dr Munib Ul Rehman, whose research focuses on a new cement system with lower embodied carbon than conventional products. His research aims to address the high carbon footprint of cement and concrete, one of the world’s largest industrial sources of CO₂ emissions, while contributing to circular economy principles.

What makes you passionate about this area? 

I’m particularly passionate about this area because it allows me to contribute to reducing the environmental footprint of the construction industry. My research focuses on developing sustainable construction materials, which I find meaningful as it supports more responsible resource use and will benefit future generations. 

Why did you decide to join the Deakin Institute for Frontier Materials? 

I decided to join the Deakin Institute for Frontier Materials to enhance my expertise in advanced analytical techniques for material characterisation. The institute’s strong research focus, access to state-of-the-art facilities, and collaborative environment made it the right place to further develop my skills and contribute to high-quality research.

What motivates you in your research? 

I’m motivated by both the continuous learning process and the opportunity to contribute to innovation in sustainable construction materials. Developing next-generation, eco-efficient solutions that can reduce environmental impact keeps me engaged and driven in my research. 

What inspired you to start a career in your field? 

I was inspired to pursue civil engineering through early exposure at home, where my father worked as an electrician and contributed to building projects. Later, witnessing a major metro project being constructed in my city further sparked my interest in infrastructure development. These experiences motivated me to choose civil engineering so I could contribute to projects that positively impact communities. 

What is your technical goal in the next 12 months?  

In the next 12 months, my technical goal is to develop and advance ultra-low to zero-clinker cement systems that can significantly reduce the carbon footprint of cement and concrete production. Specifically, I aim to contribute to formulations and processing approaches that can achieve a 50–70% reduction in CO₂ emissions compared to conventional Portland cement, while maintaining the required mechanical performance and durability for practical applications. 

What are some of the key findings of your research? 

In my research, I developed blended cement systems that reduce clinker content by 65–70%, resulting in about 50–55% lower CO₂ emissions and 30–40% lower embodied carbon compared to conventional cement. I also incorporated recycled materials such as plasterboard and eggshell waste, helping reduce landfill waste while improving sustainability. 

Why is your research important and how can it make a difference? 

My research is important because it directly addresses the high carbon footprint of cement and concrete, which are among the largest industrial sources of CO₂ emissions. By reducing clinker content and incorporating recycled materials, it offers a practical pathway to lower embodied carbon in construction without compromising performance. 

It also supports circular economy practices by converting wastes like plasterboard and eggshells into useful construction materials instead of sending them to landfill.

If you weren’t in research – is there another occupation you could see yourself in? 

I would still see myself in a research role, but possibly in a different field such as human psychology, where I could explore human behaviour, cognition, and decision-making. 

When you are not at work, what are you doing? 

Traveling and watching a good series on Netflix.  

What advice would you give your younger self? 

Master the art of effective time management and work-life balance.
