The Deakin Institute for Frontier Materials is home to the largest fibre and textile research group in the Southern Hemisphere.

The group has broad expertise and capability across fibres and textiles, with strengths in producing functional fibres and textiles for energy and sensing systems, carbon fibre and composites, repurposing and recycling waste and surface engineering.

Our fibres and textiles research group is multi-disciplinary – consisting of textile engineers, fibre technologists, materials scientists, physicists, chemists, engineers, biologists and polymer scientists all focused on driving innovation toward new circular materials and technologies. Our researchers have a strong focus on improving the sustainability of fibre and textile industries across the supply chain.
