Our Surface and Interface Chemistry group, led by Professor Luke Henderson has a growing body of research that is expanding the use of carbon fibres by imbuing the material with tailored functionality – from changing its colour to giving it the ability to absorb and store energy – using reliable, scalable and rapid surface modification techniques.

Our research capabilities

Surface functionalisation and coatings

The team develops advanced chemical and physical treatments to modify carbon fibre surfaces, improving adhesion, conductivity, and compatibility with polymer matrices. These modifications enable multifunctional composites for aerospace, automotive, and energy sectors.

Energy storage and sensing integration
